There's only so long a Representative can be the subject of an FBI investigation into a shady land deal with a former business partner and campaign donor before he gets the urge to hang up his spurs and seek out a more private life. Rep. Rick Renzi (R-AZ) has announced he won't seek re-election in 2008.

Questions about his real estate dealings (his inquiries about which landed him a supporting role in the U.S. attorney scandal) prompted an FBI raid on his home and his resignation of key committee positions fueled speculation he wasn't long for Capitol Hill.

The Wall Street Journal
has the full back story on the land deal, which involved Renzi pressuring a copper mining company to buy land owned by a former business partner (and campaign supporter) as part of a larger deal to allow the copper company to swap land they owned, for public land they wanted to drill on.
