New Mexico Candidates Run With Full Public FinancingSubmitted by Nancy Watzman on Thu, 04/20/2006 - 9:29am.
Three candidates running for spots on the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission are opting to run with full public financing under the new law in that state, reports the Las Cruces Sun-News. In all, thirteen candidates are running in three districts.
Max Brix, executive director of Common Cause-New Mexico, told the paper it would be good to see more participants, "but I think it's a good start."
Nick Nyhart, Public Campaign's executive director, told the paper that participation in full public financing systems typically grows with each election cycle. "I think (initially) there is always some caution, because people have never seen it work before -- and they always want somebody else to be the one to try it out," said Nyhart.
