Is Rep. Pombo in Trouble?Submitted by Katie Schlieper on Wed, 06/07/2006 - 9:35am.
In an article in USA Today on his imminent departure from the House of Representatives, Tom DeLay is quoted expressing disappointment with the 63% of the vote he got in his March Republican primary: "'That's not good enough,' he said, estimating it would have cost up to $5 million to get re-elected to the suburban Houston seat he first won in 1984."
Well, DeLay won't be running anymore but there's another Republican who's faced serious ethical criticism for his connections with disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff showing similar numbers following his primary. Seven-term Representative Richard Pombo (CA), who faced a primary challenge from former congressman Pete McCloskey pulled in 62% of the votes, and now faces Jerry McNerney in the general.
If The Hammer knew 63% guaranteed him an expensive fight to retain his office, Pombo must know he's going to have to get cozy with his big-check-writing corporate allies to bolster his bid.
