Prop 89 and the Insurance IndustrySubmitted by Katie Schlieper on Mon, 08/28/2006 - 2:10pm.
According to recent data, about 60% of the money funding the opposition to the California Clean Elections ballot initiative is coming from the insurance industry, who have a vested interest in maintaining pay-to-play politics in the state.
California's insurance interests know how the campaign contribution game is played in Sacramento, and they play to great effect as this summary of their activity suggests - feeding $25 million into greasing the legislative wheels just since 2003. In return they get legislators who fight against bills that would benefit the average California resident trying to recover from natural disaster or pay his or her healthcare premiums.
