Food that Fattens Your Wallet? Works for Pombo...

After last week's spinach scare, easing food safety restrictions is probably the last thing people want. But some people have paid a lot of money to get legislation passed...

Rep. Richard Pombo (R-CA) is a cosponsor of HR 4167, legislation that would restrict states from enacting food safety regulations that are stronger than federal government standards. If passed, the bill would preempt a law that restrict the level of lead in candy and one that keeps parents and women aware of the risks of consuming too much fish with high levels of mercury.

There is a group of folks that support the legislation, though - and they are the agribusiness interests that have given Rep. Pombo nearly $1.4 million for his Congressional races, including money from crop production, agricultural services, food processing, and beef. Click here to download the full report.
