Weldon Watch

Greg Gordon at McClatchey is reporting that the Justice Department has opened an investigation into possible wrongdoing by Rep. Curt Weldon (R-PA) used his influence on behalf of clients of his daughter's lobbying firm - two Russian businesses and a Serbian group tied to Slobodan Milosevic. Karen Weldon, the Congressman's daughter, had little lobbying experience when she opened a firm with Charles Sexton, a friend of her father's in 2002.  They went on to gain nearly $1 million in contracts from two Russian groups and a Serbian group - all of whom had interests tied to the legisative agenda of Rep. Weldon.  Read the whole story for details on the three contracts in question - of particular interest is a half-million dollar deal with Russian energy firm Itera made just days after Weldon championed increased cooperation with Russia on energy issues, and hosted an event for Itera's chairman attended by nearly 30 members of Congress. Hmmmm?  UPDATE: The FBI raids the homes of Karen Weldon and Charles Sexton.
