Well Worth It

The Chicago Sun-Times has a great article on the Fair Elections Now Act, praising its potential to reign in campaign spending and produce a Congress mroe responsive to the needs of constituents. Overall, a very clear explanation of the bill, and a pragmatic enumeration of its benefits.

The article touches on the control measures built into the bill to ensure that candidates who receive funds have sufficient public support to justify them, and that the candidates who do opt to use the Fair Elections system are able to run competitive campaigns without private money. Acknowledging that the small cost to taxpayers to fund the system is made up for by the benefits they would incur, the article concludes: "if we got a Congress that is more responsive to the voters, less busy chasing dollars and less reliant on special interests, the cost would be worth it."
