Pardon me, Rep. Bachmann

The St. Cloud Times reported over the weekend that first-term Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) has rescinded a pardon request for a friend and campaign contributor after his house was searched by the FBI. In December 2007, Bachmann requested the pardon of Frank Vennes, a man who had served time after pleading  guilty "in 1987 to money laundering and no contest to charges of illegally selling a firearm and using a telephone to facilitate cocaine distribution when he owned a pawnshop in Bismarck, N.D., according to court records." In 2006, Vennes and his wife donated over $18,000 to Bachmann and her related candidate committees. Bachmann's campaign manager, who usually serves as her Chief of Staff in Washington, is unsure whether Bachmann has submitted any other pardon requests for her two years in office.  According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Vennes has donated $44,000 over the years to a variety of Minnesota candidates. It's unclear whether any other contributions recipients wrote pardon requests, however.
