As I was checking my Google news alerts this morning, I came across this article from the Arizona Capitol Times highlighting "quotes of the year." This one caught my eye from October:“Biggest inhibitor of free speech: the Clean Elections Commission.” — Rep. Bob Robson, giving his take on the practical effects of Arizona’s system of publicly funded campaigns. Those against changing our pay-to-play system always throw "free speech" as their excuse for opposing Clean Elections. Well, let's see whose speech Robson is worried about. In 2008, he unsuccessfully ran for the Corporation Commission. Other candidates for the position ran and won using Clean Elections. The only fundraising they had to do was collect $5 qualifying contributions from state residents. Robson didn't participate in the program, though. He did raise over $150,000 for his campaign in 2008 from lobbyists, real estate agents, financiers, and home contractors, among others. In his previous elections for his seat in the Arizona House, Robson raised thousands of dollars from the same people.Yeah, free speech. That's what Arizona Clean Elections harms when it allows candidates with diverse backgrounds to run for office without collecting any more than $5 from contributors.
