The Chronicles of Money, Politics, and the Special Interest Lap Dog and Pony Show

Here's a round-up of Public Campaign and Public Campaign Action Fund's work for the week of July 5-July 8, 2011.

  • Who has time to legislate when there are campaign donors to call? Public Campaign's Aaron Sherb has an op-ed in The Hill today on the inordinate amount of time lawmakers spend raising campaign cash, and the need for the Fair Elections Now Act
  • It doesn't take 140 characters to figure this one out. President Obama held a Twitter Town hall on Wednesday, and noted the influence that big money has in Washington, D.C.
  • Yes, that's what we need, less regulation of Big Oil companies. Those guys are really hurting. Wonder who Rep. Mike Simpson (R-Idaho) is looking out for? Public Campaign Action Fund slammed Simpson yesterday for rewarding his big money donors at the expennse of the safety and health of the people.
  • How do you go from climate change believer to skeptic? If you're Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), follow the campaign dollar signs. Public Campaign Action Fund posted this blog, calling Rep. Upton out for his shifting position on environmental regulation, which just so happened to coincide with a huge influx of oil and gas industry campaign cash.
  • Special interest lap dog and pony show. Big Money Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) proves, yet again, that he's always a safe bet to come through for a wealthy special interest. And Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), elected to "change Washington," appears willing to follow in McConnell's horse-trading footsteps.
  • They say that records were meant to be broken, but the only thing that's broken is our campaign finance system. The the second quarter fundraising period ended recently and not surprisingly some big numbers are being reported. Public Campaign Action Fund offered this take on what is likely to be the most expensive election of all time.
