What Did He Know and When Did He Know It?

Coordination? Nooooooooo.

ABC News reports that Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum personally thanked Annette Simmons for her $1 million donation to his super PAC on a swing through Texas last month. A sweet gesture, to be sure. There's just one problem. If his campaign and super PAC are not coordinating, as they are forbidden to by law, then how did Santorum know about the big money donation considering it was just publicly filed with the FEC yesterday? Hmmmmm.

The super PAC onslaught brought on by Citizens United is bad enough. The lack of real oversight of these millions of dollars flying around would be funny if it weren't so blatant. In the Citizens United ruling, Justice Kennedy famously noted: “We now conclude that independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption.” That may be the case if these expenditures were actually independent, which this case, and countless others have shown.

"I am shocked to learn that there is super PAC fundraising going on in this house."
