Clean Up California
Take Action! Californians will soon be given the chance to dramatically alter how politics are run in their state. On the ballot in November, voters have the chance to take the influence of lobbyists and powerful special interest money out of politics by implementing publicly financed elections. Help us support Proposition 89-the California Clean Money and Fair Elections Initiative and let's make elections in the Golden State about voters, not political donors.
Here is what you can do:
Facts on the Initiative On June 26, Proposition 89-the California Clean Money and Fair Elections Initiative qualified for the November ballot. If passed, the initiative would transform politics in California by giving regular voters the power in politics, not lobbyists and well heeled special interests. It would set up a system of publicly financed elections that would level the political playing field and make politicians accountable to voters.
Click here to see what organizations are endorsing Proposition 89. What it does:
• The initiative establishes a system where “Clean Elections” candidates who pledge not to accept private contributions qualify for public financing of their campaigns.
• Lobbyists and state contractors would be barred from donating to political candidates.
• Corporations would be limited in the amount of money they can contribute to ballot initiative campaigns.
How it works:
• Once qualified, Clean Elections candidates would have their campaigns financed through a public fund.
• To qualify for public financing, candidates would have to gather a set number of $5 contributions from registered voters in their district. For example, a candidate for assembly would have to gather 500 ($5) contributions to qualify.
• If a candidate who chooses not to participate in the public financing system raises more money than their publicly financed opponents, the state will match dollar for dollar the publicly financed candidates up to a set cap.
