Fact Congressman Pombo’s campaign and leadership political action committee (Rich PAC) received $7,500 from convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, including a $2,000 contribution two weeks after Pombo was named chairman of the House Committee on Resources in January 2003. Pombo’s Rich PAC also received $3,000 from those Abramoff represented on the Northern Mariana Islands, including employees of the commonwealth’s government, the Saipan Garmant Manufacturers Association, and Tan Holdings, the clothing manufacturer.

Fact Congressman Pombo is the chair of the House Committee on Resources which has jurisdiction over the Northern Mariana Islands. According to the Contra Costa Times, Congressman George Miller has “repeatedly [called] for a congressional investigation into Abramoff’s role in the Marianas, but Pombo refused.” As the Washington Post reported, “[a Department of the] Interior report found that Chinese women were subject to forced abortions and that women and children were subject to forced prostitution in the local sex-tourism industry.” In his letters to Pombo, Miller cites similar reports of widespread abuses on the Marianas.
