As long as a corporation has the legal standing as a person, nothing will change. We have been trying to reform the process of electing our representatives all my life, and I am fifty-two years old,and the only change that has occured is business now totally controls government for their benefit and their benefit only.Sad but true. We have failed the founding fathers and ourselves by allowing this to happen.

McCain and Public Financing

The DNC wants the FEC to investigate McCain's decision to first opt in to the public financing program during the primary election, then to opt out once he was the presumptive nominee and his fundraising prospects improved.

I thought I heard that the DNC was trying to sue the FEC or something because McCain was violating the public financing agreement already...?

Relieved by the opt out!

As a Clean Elections supporter, I was greatly relieved when Obama announced his opting out of public financing for 2008. The system would have handicapped him, and could feasibly have cost him the election. I believe Obama's loss would dramatically reduce the odds of making national Clean Elections a reality during the next term.

Elections Change: MD/VA cultures affect national Change

I believe the 50 states are looking to federal activity providing the legislative initiative in cleaning up elctuions everywhere. I also believe due to its location, that the DC capitol and the federal decison making process is permeated by Tradtionalistic Maryland/Virginia poltical cultures, that makes legislation/change slow and very incremental, for other states nationwide. Washington reigns in the other states who want more agressive change, by perpetuating and imposing this formal, old fashioned, MD/VA way of doing things onto Congressional procedures affecting all Americans.

I agree that Obama risks losing much support from moderates like me by abandoning his principled stand for public finance.

Campaign Finance Reform

If now is the time for change, then cleaning special interest money out of the political process would be a great place to start. The American people deserve a system designed to prevent glorified bribery and betrayal of the public interest; not one that encourages and rewards them. Any candidate sincerely committed to change should speak out loud and clear for publicly funded campaigns. And, he or she should condemn the arrogance of legislators who systematically sabotage and block any substantial effort to institute real campaign finance reform. Most importantly, candidates need to match words with action by coming clean about all their finances.

we expect people to follow through on promises like campaign finance reform, and then just forget about achieving real democracy's with public funded money and only this arrangement. we mistrust anybody that does not follow through on this most important matter.

Please don't throw brickbats

Please don't throw brickbats against the only two candidates who ARE taking a stand against some campaign cash. They should be complimented on limiting their campaign funds especially from the influence of the special interests represented by lobbyists. This is one way they are showing more character than Hillary and the others.

To level the playing field

To level the playing field we need to have federal funding of elections. The amounts of money that has to be raised is obscene and contributes to buying elections. So lets work for fairer campaigns by keeping the amount of money even for all candidates by using federally funded campaign money.

If you have someone pay your election, then you owe them when you are in office, whether you agree with thier motives or not. Therefore, all elections should be free.
