Next Step in North Carolina

[1]

Take Action!

The General Assembly has passed a pilot project for three Council of State seats in North Carolina. This is a big victory for Clean Elections! Now, we're just waiting for Gov. Easley to sign the legislation.

Advocates in North Carolina are working to put voters ahead of donors and pass legislation that would bring Voter-Owned Elections to the General Assembly as well. We need your help to win. Here’s what you can do:

Sign our petition supporting Voter-Owned elections in North Carolina. [2]

Make a contribution today to help support our efforts to make elections about voters, not campaign donors. [3]

Ask your friends to join this campaign. [4]

About the Legislation

The North Carolina Legislature will soon consider legislation that would expand the publicly financed elections system from just judicial elections to elections for the General Assembly and the Council of State.

Under the program, after raising a set amount of money from a broad base of constituents, qualifying candidates would receive money from a public fund for their campaign. Once they receive the public funds, the candidates cannot take private money and must adhere to strict spending limits. If a privately funded candidate outspends a publicly financed candidate, additional funds are available to keep the campaign competitive.

Since 2004, North Carolina has had public financing available for candidates running for seats on the Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals.
