The Wisconsin gubernatorial race between Democratic Governor Jim Doyle and Republican challenger Mark Green is drawing attention in state for the narrow profile of donors filling both candidates campaign coffers.
This story and video [1], up on Madison's WMTV site, which notes candidates' dependence on television advertising and the huge amount of money needed to finance it, cites Wisconsin Democracy Campaigns Mike McCabe on the small number of wealthy interests who have financed both campaigns: "This is a state of 5 million people, yet 364 people provided more than half of the campaign contributions to the Green campaign. A little bit over 370 people gave ¾ of the money Gov. Doyle got from individual contributors."
In the accompanying video, its also noted that some large contributors are giving to both campaigns, presumably to shore up their interest no matter the outcome. What about grassroots support for either candidate from those unable to write big checks? Well, I hope those television advertisements are good, since that's likely as close as most voters will get to contact with the candidates.
