Vote to end presidential public financing: “completely tone deaf”

Washington, D.C.—Public Campaign Action Fund released the following statement in response to House passage of pro-special interest legislation to end the presidential public financing system. The legislation passed by a margin of 235 to 190.

Washington, D.C.—Public Campaign Action Fund (PCAF) announced today it will consider how House members vote on Rep. Gregg Harper’s (R-Miss.) pro-special interest legislation to eliminate the presidential public financing system in its 2012 targeting decisions. The group’s electoral accountability project, Campaign Money Watch, has spent approximately $10 million in congressional and presidential races.

Washington, D.C.—The U.S. House of Representatives will take up a measure today (H.R. 359) that, if passed, will place elections more squarely in the hands of corporate interests by repealing the presidential campaign financing system, according to a leading national watchdog group, Public Campaign Action Fund. Republican lawmakers pushing the repeal claim they are doing so to save money, but a review of earmarks secured by the lawmakers pushing the change suggest they would have saved more by starting with their own legislative pork.
