Rewriting History

Trying to leave behind his involvement in the Keating Five scandal, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and his advisers today declared the whole thing was a "political smear job," and it didn't really go down how anybody says it did. Well, as the Google tells us, there is someone that disagrees with Sen. McCain. That would be Sen. McCain.

Activists You Should Know

A PBS producer and a writer have collaborated on a book, Your America that chronicles the work of accidental activists -- ordinary Americans who saw injustice and fought to fix it, creating successful grassroots movements for change in the process. One of the stories told is that of Jackie Thrasher a Clean Elections supporter in Arizona who went on to win a seat in the state House of Representatives.

Millionaire's Decision

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has agreed to hear arguments on the so-called "millionaire's amendment" to the Bipartisan Campaign Finance Reform Act (BCRA, aka McCain-Feingold). The millionaire's amendment exempts candidates facing wealthy self-financing opponents from certain federal campaign contribution limits established in BCRA. This article in The Hill notes that the ruling could impact the Clean Elections laws in Arizona and Maine.

Rep Rick Renzi (R-AZ), has taken tens of thousands in campaign cash from ManTech, a defense contractor who's senior vice president is Renzi's father. Renzi, for his part, has voted in favor of nine separate bills from which ManTech was set to profit. Conflict of interest? Nick Nyhart, our executive director, <a href=
read more

You Break It, You Buy It

An Arizona Rep. opts into the Clean Election system, breaks the law, gets booted from office, then tries to use the recent Vermont Supreme Court decision to get around the consequences. That's the kind of integrity we're looking for.

Granny D in AZ

Go Granny D!

Doris "Granny D" Haddock, the 96 year-old woman who walked across the United States in support of campaign finance reform is in Phoenix today to oppose the repeal of Arizona's Clean Elections system. This morning, Granny D. was scheduled to deliver letters to members of the Arizona Legislature announcing that she will walk through the districts of those running for reelection this year who support the repeal of the reform program. She says she hopes that by walking through their districts she will create "a useful conversation between voters and the anti-reform incumbents."
