Scandal on Scandal

Is corruption contagious? With the FBI already knee-deep in investigations into Republican members of Congress who may have traded votes for money, the Chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has just released a statement saying he's asking the FBI to investigate the NRCC for possible financial fraud in its fundraising operation.

A Donor's a Donor

Abdul Tawala Ibn Ali Alishtari is a generous guy. Since 2002, he's given $15,250 to the National Republican Congressional Committee. And yesterday he was charged with funding a terrorist training camp in Afghanistan. In response, the NRCC has cautioned people not to rush to judgement on Alishtari, and moreover has not disclosed what it intends to do with the money it received from Alishtari. Good to be a big donor, huh?

Make of this what you will...

At least someone has limits on what they'd do for cash.

Movie star and pop singer Jessica Simpson, recently of Dukes of Hazard fame, refused to appear at a Republican fundraising event to meet with Bush. It's not clear why the fundraising event is the only time on Bush's schedule.

"It just feels wrong," one Simpson insider told Reuters on Wednesday, adding that the actress keeps her political views private. "She would love to meet the president and talk about Operation Smile … but she can't do it at a fund-raiser for the Republican Party."

Public Campaign Action Fund is unveiling three TV ads today in a campaign to take Tom DeLay's scandals directly to members of Congress.
